About This Project

My name is Jabiz. I am 45 years old and I teach grade 8.

I have taught MS for nearly two decades, and in that time I have done my best to share great music, films, and books with my students. Thirteen years ago my daughter Kaia was born, and of course I've shared my love of art with her since the day she was born, but now as she enters Grade 8, it feels like the right time to formalize this process by adding a bit more structure.

There are albums, books, and movies that I am very excited to share with her. I want to learn from her and see what she thinks. I hope this process brings us closer and she can get to know me better.

This is how this project began:

I made a list of 5 albums, books and films that I want to experience with her through out her year in grade eight. I wanted the conversations to have a bit more depth than the casual, “so whaddya think?”

I was pleasantly surprised when I suggested a blog/podcast/youtube style discussion of these works of art and she said yes. The teacher in me also wants her to have a consistent and serious writing practice and be exposed to how social media might work when we share ideas and feeling instead of just vapid celebrity gossip with a wider network.

I am hoping that this experience strengthens her writing, exposes her to some of my most influential pieces of art and guides her to learn that she can carve out a space on the internet to share her ideas on things that matter to her.

Once we get started, she will also share music, films and books she thinks I should experience, so it is not so one-sided.

My name is Kaia I’m 13 years old and I’m going into grade  8, I love music and art a lot. I enjoy bullet journaling and drawing, and I’m really into drama.

I feel like my preferences on genres within books and movies/tv-shows are really similar. I like horror, mystery, realistic fiction, and I love a good comedy.

I’m looking forward to learning more about each other with my dad and I’m really excited for this because I get to read/watch/listen to things my dad thinks is important. I think this will overall help us be closer and we can learn new things about one another through what we choose.

I’m especially excited to show him some of what I enjoy reading/watching/listening to. I think that we will be able to understand each other better and I want to show my dad things that are important to me as well as showing him the things that I enjoy.

I can’t wait to talk to each other and compare our thoughts about whatever we just read/watched/listened to.
